Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”
One of the jewels of New York City’s Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection is Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.” It is probably the most famous and recognizable of van Gogh’s works, executed with all of the passion and vigor that characterize the works of the Dutch painter. The painting was completed in June of 1889 while van Gogh was staying in a sanitarium in Arles, and it depicts the view from his room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. The painting has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art since 1941. Considered to be Vincent van Gogh’s magnum opus, it has been reproduced many times.
